Initial situation and project concept

Since September of 2004, the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences and the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) have jointly conducted the English language study programs, Environmental Engineering and Information Technology, under the general management of Prof. Joachim Litz. When the teaching courses for these degrees are carried out in practice, the experience in Germany is that Chinese students have significant difficulties adjusting to German teaching methods. It is apparent that the difference between Chinese and German tertiary instruction lies in the fact that in China, lectures consist in students literally being lectured; the students’ task is to remain passive and, with regard to securing results, consists exclusively of receiving information. In Germany, in contrast – bearing in mind all the difficulties associated with tertiary teaching – there is more of a focus on seminars, which demands the active participation of students; in particular, the contribution of independent thoughts and an ability to reflect. In seeking to offer Chinese students support to put them in a better position to successfully complete their studies in Germany, a project concept was developed which, by means of “scientifically based and targeted training of Chinese tertiary teaching staff in methodology and didactics”, aims to improve the quality of the courses, as well as opportunities for students of the German-Chinese cooperation program. A corresponding project application filed by Prof. Litz of the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences was approved by the DAAD in February of 2008 for an initial funding period of two years, and may – providing that the project is viable - be extended by a maximum of two years. Flensburg University has joined as a co-operation partner for the organisation and handling of scientific development and secondary research, and has assigned Dr Steffen Kirchhof of the Centre for Further Education in Science the task of implementation.
